My name is Shayna Korol, and I am a writer focused on health and biosecurity. I am currently a Biosecurity Policy Fellow at the Nuclear Threat Initiative, sponsored by the Open Philanthropy Technology Policy Fellowship. At NTI, I support efforts to counter catastrophic biological risks that threaten humanity’s future.

I previously worked as a news researcher and reporter for BioNews Services, covering rare and chronic diseases. My work has appeared in Becker's Hospital Review, Becker's Spine Review, HuffPost, Asia-Pacific Leadership Network, Accessibility.com, and the University of Minnesota BioTechnology Institute's website.

I have a background in disability policy, public health, journalism, and health services research. At the beginning of the coronavirus pandemic, I helped develop the COVID-19 SNAP Waiver Database, which analyzed how states responded to growing food insecurity. You can read more about it here

In 2017, I graduated from Brandeis University with a bachelor's degree in Health: Science, Society, and Policy with magna cum laude and Phi Beta Kappa honors. I was a Ruderman Social Justice in Disability Scholar, and I helped conduct research on the parental rights of people with disabilities.

I am fascinated by the intersection of science and policy, and I love using narrative to explore it. In my spare time, I enjoy hiking, learning about animals, and reading and writing fiction.
